In February 2022, BCCI announced they are going to start a women’s version of IPL (Indian Premier League), replacing the Women’s T20 Challenge event as India’s biggest women’s Twenty20 Competition. Later, in October, the BCCI president announced that five city-based franchises would participate in the tournament, which will be held in March 2023. The league was named as Women’s Indian Premier League which later officially changed to Women’s Premier League.
